Gregg's Computer Shack Stingers

Social hockey team set up by Gregg to help get a bit more physical activity into what for some would otherwise be a rather sedentary life.

The team plays in Rotorua most weekends and is less concerned with winning than having fun and keeping some sort of fitness level.

The Gregg’s Computer Shack Stingers social hockey team had a very good attacking game against Forest View on Sunday. They started off slowly, conceding 3 goals early in the first half. Revenge was soon taken, however, with Forest View caught napping from a free hit close to the 25 metre line. Robert Middleton took the hit quickly, slotting the ball neatly into the corner. The goal was preceded by unrelenting pressure from the Stingers, who attacked with good, constructive passing and some scything runs through the opposition defence. Forest View scored once more before the break, for a half-time score of 4-1.

The Stingers started the second half off well, getting right up past their opponent’s 16 metre line and forcing a penalty corner. Forest View hit back, though, scoring two goals before the Stingers erupted once more. This goal saw some excellent passing around the halfway line, before Stephen Gray took off down the sideline, dodging several defenders and hitting a brilliant shot past the goalie in the corner.

One more goal from Forest View, and then the Stingers struck for a third time. This time it was an excellent team goal, with solid build-up play taking the ball into the opposition circle. Gregg Sheehan executed a perfectly timed shot straight past the goalie. Forest View wrapped up the game with another goal, bringing the score to 8-3 in their favour.

The Stingers played well in all areas of the game, young Chris Seal, however, having an especially good game. All members of the team enjoyed themselves immensely, and the hockey on offer was of a particularly exciting, running type.

Commitment was the most noticeable feature of the hockey game on Sunday, between the Gregg’s Computer Shack Stingers social side and Stretton & Co. Taupo rep team. The Stingers showed strong commitment right from the start, with 14 players present - a near record attendance from the Stingers. Right through the game, they were extremely committed with their tackling and intercepting. The player of the game for the Stingers was Robert Middleton, who was exceptional in defence, and started some excellent attacking moves from fullback. Also particularly strong throughout were the goalkeeper, Andrew Whitmore, and Stephen Gray, playing on the wing. Some very positive shots at goal were played by the Stingers, and they were surely unlucky not to score from a run of play that saw more than 8 shots at goal. The Stretton & Co side played reasonably well, scoring 8 goals in the first half, but the Stingers defended exceptionally well in the second half to limit them to two.

Gregg's Computer Shack Stingers had their second win since their inception on Sunday against Rotorua Boys High School 2nd XI. In a closely fought game the first goal of the 3 - 0 win came to centre forward, Gregg Sheehan early in the second half from a classic right wing attack. The second goal was hammered in by centre half Shane Wilkinson after a penalty just outside the Boys High circle and the 3rd goal was again by Gregg Sheehan after a penalty corner saw a rebound from the goalies pads.

Gregg's Computer Shack Stingers lost by 5 - 1 to Ngapuna in Rotorua on Sunday night. In wet conditions similar to last week the two teams played a friendly "mixed" match. Taupo got the early possession and threatened a goal in the opening minutes, but this was foiled by quick recovery from Ngapuna. Ngapuna were next on the attack and managed to score from it. The next goal came to the Stingers from a play which started at the halfway with a backpass from center forward, Gregg Sheehan to right half Cliff Graham. A good pass through to Steven Gray on right wing saw open ground and Gray managed to move in quickly for the goal. After this the rain started in earnest and although there were good attacks from both sides through to the end, the Ngapuna side managed to finish off more of theirs with goals

Gregg's Computer Shack Stingers lost by 7 - 0 to Indians in Rotorua on Sunday night. In what could best be described as steady to heavy rain Taupo managed to hold the score to a more respectable level than last weeks game against Tokoroa. Indians got an early goal in the first 20 seconds but then found it tough to get the next before half time. Goalie for Taupo, Andrew Whitmore worked hard with the rest of the backs to lead a spirited defence. The Stingers also had their moments in attack with Chris Seal, a young Tauhara 3rd form student making his debut in hockey (a change of code this year from soccer). Chris surprised the older players with some great work on left wing - managing to foil numerous Indian plays as well as almost getting a goal himself. This youngest and smallest player on the field was the well-deserved player of the day.

Gregg's Computer Shack Stingers lost by 23 - 0 to Forest View Old Boys in Rotorua on Sunday. Although quite outclassed in this level of hockey the Stingers put up a gallant fight and the score didn't reflect the several good attacks that the team managed throughout the game which almost, but not quite, ended in goals.

In rainy conditions at Rotorua, Gregg's Computer Shack Stingers (after managing to muster only 9 players - and no goalie) went down 12-0 to Ngapuna. In contrast last week, the Stingers managed their first win since being formed this year against Rotorua Boys High School, 1-0
